Comedy Show Types & Terminology

The words comics, bookers and venues use every week, from the open mic to the festival headliner.

Open mic
A sign-up show where any comic, often a newcomer, gets a short set to try out material. Usually free or low cost for the audience, and the place most comics start.
Bringer show
A show where comics earn stage time by bringing a set number of paying guests. Common for newer comics trying to get spots at clubs.
Showcase
A lineup of several comics each doing a set, often at a club. Showcases present working comics to audiences, and sometimes to bookers.
Host / MC
Opens the show, warms up the crowd, introduces each comic and handles announcements between sets.
Feature
The middle act on a standard club bill: a longer set than the opener, before the headliner.
Headliner
The final and longest set of the night, and the act the show is billed and sold around.
Residency
A recurring show with the same comic, producer or format at the same venue on a regular schedule, such as weekly or monthly.
Roast
A show where a guest of honor is mocked by a panel of comics. The jokes are harsh, the spirit is affectionate.
Improv
Unscripted comedy made up on the spot, usually from audience suggestions. Short-form improv uses games; long-form builds extended scenes.
Sketch
Short, scripted comedy scenes performed by a cast, sometimes with costumes, props, music or video.
Clean comedy
Material without profanity or explicit content, suited to family, faith, school and corporate audiences.
Late show
A later-evening performance, often following an early show on the same night. Late shows sometimes lean edgier.
Comedy festival
A multi-day event with many shows across one or more venues: headliners, showcases, competitions and often industry scouts.
Drink minimum
A house policy at some clubs that requires each guest to buy a set number of drinks or food items on top of the ticket. Always state it on the listing.
Crowd work
Improvised back-and-forth between the comic and the audience, as opposed to prepared material.
Tight five
A comic's best, most polished five minutes, used for auditions, showcases and TV spots.
The light
The signal (often a flashlight or a lamp at the back) telling a comic their time is nearly up. Respecting the light keeps the show on schedule.
Taping / special
A show recorded for release as a comedy special, album or clip. Tickets often note that the audience may be filmed.

Run, Price & Market Comedy Shows Every Week

Practical playbooks for the people who make comedy happen: the comics on stage and the venues and promoters behind them.

For comedians

Running a weekly show

  • Pick one night and time and keep it. Regulars plan around a fixed slot.
  • Book lineups well ahead, and mix rising comics with a few names your crowd already knows.
  • Rotate the bill so regulars see something new each week.
  • Respect the light, start on time, and keep the running order tight.
  • Record sets (with permission) and collect emails at the door.

Pricing tickets

  • Check what comparable shows in your city charge on the same night with a similar lineup.
  • Keep open mics and new rooms free or low cost to build a habit.
  • Use an early-bird price and a slightly higher door price to reward planning ahead.
  • For headline shows, offer a front-row or VIP tier rather than raising every seat.
  • Show any drink minimum and fees up front. Surprises at the door cost repeat visits.

Marketing your shows

  • List every date as early as possible, with a clear show name, night and poster.
  • Post short clips from the comics on the bill, and tag them so they share.
  • Build an email list of past attendees and send it before every show.
  • Get the show onto local event calendars. One Evvnt listing can reach many of them.

For venues & promoters

Running comedy every week

  • Launch a named recurring series on a consistent night so it becomes a habit.
  • Get the room right: a good mic, a lit stage, seats close to the front, and bar noise down during sets.
  • Set house rules for phones and heckling and announce them before the first act.
  • Agree pay, set lengths and promotion duties with comics in writing before the date.
  • Track attendance by night and format to see what your crowd comes back for.

Pricing tickets

  • Price to your room size, the draw of the lineup and the night of the week.
  • Use tiers: general admission, premium seats, and dinner-and-show packages.
  • Offer group and multi-show bundles to fill quieter nights.
  • Be clear about age policy, drink minimums and fees on every listing.

Marketing your room

  • Publish the whole season of dates at once so search engines and calendars pick them up.
  • Sell tickets with reporting, so you know who bought and can invite them back.
  • Email past buyers when a strong lineup is announced.
  • Co-promote with the comics on each bill and boost headline nights with Premium promotion.

Comedy Events FAQ

Where can I find comedy shows near me?

Use the live Evvnt comedy calendar linked on this page to browse current comedy events, including stand-up, improv, sketch and open mics. Events ticketed by Evvnt are shown first, then events featured by Evvnt, then events listed through Evvnt-powered local calendars.

What is the difference between an open mic and a showcase?

An open mic is a sign-up show where any comic can get a short set, usually free or low cost for the audience. A showcase is a booked lineup of working comics, each doing a longer set, and usually charges admission.

How should I price tickets for a comedy show?

Look at what comparable shows in your city charge for the same day of the week and the same level of lineup, then set a price your audience will see as fair. Use early-bird and door prices, offer premium seating for headline shows, and state any drink minimum or fees up front.

Can I sell tickets for my comedy show with Evvnt?

Yes. Evvnt Ticketing supports multiple ticket types, reserved seating, recurring and timed-entry events, packages and text tickets, with reporting across all your events. Use the Ticket button on this page to get started.

How do I promote a weekly comedy night?

List every date as early as possible, keep the show name, night and poster consistent, post short clips from the comics, build an email list of past attendees, and get the show onto local event calendars. A free Evvnt listing can be syndicated across Evvnt's network of 2,594 local news and media event calendars.

Does Evvnt offer a subscription for regular shows?

Yes. Evvnt's monthly Premium subscription gives you four Premium Listing credits every month at a lower price per event than buying single promotions, which suits venues and producers who run shows every week. Current prices are on Evvnt's plans page.
